Symptom: Report Builder is slow to open
If Report Builder takes a long time to open and appears frozen at the splash screen, Report Builder might be having trouble connecting to the current server. The current server is the server URL that you entered during installation or an updated URL that you entered in the Options dialog box.
Workaround
To make Report Builder open faster, remove the URL for the current server.
To remove the URL for the current server, wait for Report Builder to open. When Report Builder is open, click the Report Builder button, and then click Options. In the Use this report server or SharePoint site by default box, either update or clear the server name.
Note: |
---|
If more than one user uses Report Builder on the same computer, each user will have to clear the server name. |
More information
For more information, open Report Builder 2.0 Help by clicking the question-mark button on the right side of the Ribbon. Then, in Help, search for “Working with and without a Report Server”.
Symptom: My Reports folder causes error
The My Reports folder feature on a report server is only supported for native report servers. (The My Reports folder is not supported on report servers that are integrated with Microsoft Office SharePoint). Even on native report servers, the default setting is to have the My Reports folder disabled. The My Reports folder only works if the folder has been enabled by the server administrator.
When the My Reports folder feature is enabled on a report server, you can do the following tasks:
-
Use the Open dialog box to select reports, shared data sources, and models from the My Reports folder.
-
Use the Save or Save As dialog box to save reports in the My Reports folder.
To enable the My Reports folder, the server administrator needs to select the Enable a My Reports folder for each user check box in the Server Properties dialog box in SQL Server Management Studio.
The following table summarizes support for the My Reports folder on report servers:
Server type | My Reports | Result |
---|---|---|
Native |
Enabled |
Folder works. |
Native |
Disabled |
Sends a message that feature is not enabled. |
SharePoint |
N/A |
Folder does not work, but there is no message sent. |

Symptom: Error message in Select Data Source dialog box
If you browse to a shared data source in the Select Data Source dialog box, and use non-alphanumeric characters to filter results, you might receive an error message. For example, entering an asterisk, as in *. or *.rdl, results in an unhandled exception error message.
Work around
To filter the items in the Select Data Source dialog box, select a value in the box that is below the Name box.
Information: What the status bar indicates
The status bar indicates your connection status to a report server.
When you open Report Builder 2.0 for the first time, Report Builder will try to connect to the report server, if any, that was specified during installation.
To change the default report server, use the Options dialog box. To open the Options dialog box, click the Report Builder button, and then click Options. Then, to change the default report server, in the Options dialog box, either update or clear the server name in the Use this report server or SharePoint site by default box.
Status bar shows | If you change the report server in the Options dialog box |
---|---|
Current report server http://<servername>/reportserver |
You need to restart Report Builder for the change to take effect. |
No current report server |
Report Builder will automatically connect because there was no current server. |
Connection failed. Retry |
Click Retry. If Report Builder still does not connect, go to Options and change the default report server. The application will automatically connect because there was no current or valid connection. |
