Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2005 Extensions for Windows® Workflow Foundation Beta 2 Installation Instructions

This version of Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation is compatible with release versions of Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0, Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, and the Microsoft Pre-Release Software WinFX® Runtime Components - February Community Technology Preview (CTP).

Note   The Beta 2 version of Windows Workflow Foundation is NOT compatible with Microsoft Office "12" (Beta 1). For a compatible version, please install version 1.2 here (English only).

Remove earlier version of Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation

If you have an earlier version of Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation installed, you must remove it before installing Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation Beta 2. Perform the following steps:

  1. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.

  2. Remove Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation.
    Note   By uninstalling the Visual Studio 2005 extensions, you also uninstall the Windows Workflow Foundation Software Development Kit (SDK).

  3. Remove Windows Workflow Foundation as described below.

Remove earlier version of Windows Workflow Foundation

If you have an earlier version of Windows Workflow Foundation installed, you must remove it before installing Windows Workflow Foundation Beta 2. Perform the following steps:

  1. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.

  2. Remove Windows Workflow Foundation.

Upgrade from a pre-release version of Visual Studio 2005

If you want to use Visual Studio 2005 to develop your workflows, then you must uninstall pre-release versions (English only) of Visual Studio 2005 and then install the release version (English only) before installing Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation Beta 2.

Updating the .NET Framework version 2.0

If you have a pre-release version of the .NET Framework version 2.0 installed on your machine, you must uninstall it and install the release version as described in the following steps:

  1. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.

  2. Remove pre-release versions of Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

  3. Install the Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86).

Install the Microsoft Pre-Release Software WinFX Runtime Components - February CTP (Optional)

If you also want to develop applications using Windows Presentation Foundation and/or Windows Communication Foundation, then the WinFX Runtime Components for the February CTP must be installed first before installing Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation Beta 2. See the WinFX February CTP download page (English only) for details on installing the WinFX Runtime Components.

Install Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation Beta 2

Install the Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation Beta 2 package from this location.

Note   Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation will not be installed if you do not have Visual Studio 2005 installed; however, the runtime components and the SDK will be installed. Also, If you have to repair an installation of Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation, you must run setup.exe again and repair it through that installation wizard rather than the one opened when you select Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation in Add or Remove Programs.

The Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation installation package contains the extensions, runtime components, and an SDK (with a command-line compiler specifically designed for compiling workflows).

It is not necessary to use Visual Studio 2005 when developing against Windows Workflow Foundation; however, if you choose to do so, the Visual Studio 2005 Extensions make designing workflows much easier through the use of a graphical designer.

Install Windows Workflow Foundation Beta 2 runtime components only

To install only the Windows Workflow Foundation Beta 2 runtime components (not the SDK, or the Visual Studio 2005 Extensions), perform the following steps:

  1. Download the Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation Beta 2 package from the link provided in the previous section.

  2. Run setup.exe.

  3. In the Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation installation wizard, de-select the following two options:
  4. Click Next and then click Install.

  5. After the selected the SDK and runtime components are installed, click Finish.

  6. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.

  7. Remove Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation.

  8. In the Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation installation wizard, select Remove.
    Note   This step removes the Windows Workflow Foundation SDK that was installed in step 2.

  9. Click Next and then click Uninstall.

  10. After the SDK component is uninstalled, click Finish.

The Windows Workflow Foundation Beta 2 runtime components will remain on your machine and can be uninstalled at a later time using Add or Remove Programs.

Note   If you have to repair an installation of Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation, you must run setup.exe again and repair it through that installation wizard rather than the one opened when you select Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation in Add or Remove Programs.
