Privacy Statement for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Pre-Release Version Setup Reports
Updated: April 2007
Microsoft is committed to helping to protect your privacy. This privacy statement explains the data collection and use practices of the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 pre-release version setup reports you may choose to send to Microsoft ("Setup Reports"). This statement does not apply to other online or offline Microsoft sites, products, or services.
Collection and Use of Information
If you choose to send Setup Reports to Microsoft, each time you exit setup, a report will be sent to Microsoft. Setup Reports do not contain any contact information about you (such as your name, address, and phone number). They do contain certain information from your computer, including information about your computer software and hardware such as your operating system name and version, session ID (a new ID is randomly generated each time you use setup), and the type of Internet connection you have (e.g., LAN). Setup Reports uses a User ID that is stored on your computer to uniquely identify it each time Setup Reports are submitted. The User ID is a randomly generated number; it does not contain any personal information and is not used to identify you. Setup Reports contain the product code for the product you are using, as well as its version and language. Setup Reports also contain information about your setup experience, including errors you encountered, which features of setup you used, buttons you clicked on, available disk space, and successful completion of Setup.
Internet enabled features in software will send information about your computer ("standard computer information") to the websites you visit and web services you use. This information is generally not personally identifiable. Standard computer information typically includes information such as your IP address, operating system version, browser version, your hardware ID which indicates the device manufacturer, device name, and version, application version and your regional and language settings.
Microsoft uses the information collected to improve our software and services.
Information that is collected by or sent to Microsoft may be stored and processed in the United States or any other country in which Microsoft or its affiliates, subsidiaries or agents maintain facilities, and by using Microsoft software, sites or services, you consent to any such transfer of information outside of your country. Microsoft abides by the safe harbor framework as set forth by the U.S. Department of Commerce regarding the collection, use, and retention of data from the European Union. Microsoft may disclose this information if required to do so by law or in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to: (a) conform to the edicts of the law or comply with legal process served on Microsoft or the site; (b) protect and defend the rights of Microsoft (including enforcement of our agreements), or (c) act in urgent circumstances to protect the personal safety of Microsoft employees, users of Microsoft software or services, or members of the public.
Microsoft occasionally hires other companies to provide limited services on its behalf, such as providing customer support, processing transactions, or performing statistical analysis of Setup Reports. Microsoft will provide those companies only the information they need to deliver the service. They are required to maintain the confidentiality of this information and are prohibited from using it for any other purpose.
Choice and Control
To turn off Setup Reports, you may uninstall and then reinstall NET Framework 3.5. When you run setup after reinstalling, uncheck the "Send anonymous information about my setup experiences to Microsoft Corporation" checkbox.
Security
Microsoft is committed to helping protect the security of the information we collect. Setup Reports use a variety of security technologies and procedures to help protect this information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. For example, when your computer submits a Setup Report, we protect it through the use of encryption, such as the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol.
Changes to this Statement
Microsoft may occasionally update this privacy statement. When we do, we will also revise the "last updated" date at the top of the privacy statement. We encourage you to periodically review this privacy statement to stay informed about how we are helping to protect the information we collect.
