This month we provide tips for customizing Office 2000 so that it works the way you want it to. Read this month's articles to learn how you can more easily access the tools you use most frequently, the Web sites you visit most often, and the folders you work in every day.

Folders and Files

It can be very annoying when you spend most of your time working in one particular folder and yet whenever you go to File/Open you are sent to the default folder instead. Learn how you can change your default folder so that File/Open takes you to the folder where you actually do your work. You can also organize templates, create shortcuts to files you use often, and customize the File menu to display your most frequently used files.

In Excel you can determine where you want to keep the workbooks you use most frequently. You might want to be able to open a particular workbook automatically every time you start Excel. To do this, save the file in the XLStart folder. Any workbook you save in the XLStart folder opens automatically whenever you start Excel.

Menus and Toolbars

You may have noticed that commands and toolbar buttons seem to vanish from time to time. They're still there; they just aren't cluttering up your workspace when you aren't using them. At any time you can click on the down arrows in a menu to see the complete list of available commands. Read Where Did My Toolbar Buttons and Commands Go in Office 2000? to learn more. You can also use the toolbar buttons and commands you customized in previous versions of Excel.
