Customizing Templates in Office 2000
Did you know that you can customize a template to suit your needs?
Although a template is a pre-designed format, you can easily redesign or
customize it by changing fonts, styles, and color schemes. For example,
you can change the font size of Heading 1 in a Word 2000 document template
or add your company logo to a PowerPoint® 2000 design template. The
content of existing documents will not be affected by your customizations
of the templates they're based on. This article will show you how to
customize templates in various Office 2000 programs.
To customize a Word 2000 template
- On the File menu, click Open, and then locate and open
the template you want to modify.
If there aren't any templates listed
in the Open dialog box, click Document Templates in the
Files of type box.
- Modify the template.
- Click Save.
Note If you want to update modified styles
automatically, when you open an existing document, on the Tools
menu, click Templates and Add-Ins, and select Automatically
update document styles.
To customize a PowerPoint 2000 template
- On the File menu, click Open, and then locate and open
the template you want to modify.
If there aren't any templates listed
in the Open dialog box, click Design Templates in the
Files of type box.
- On the View menu, point to Master, and then click the
appropriate Master.
- Modify the template.
- Click Save.
To customize an Excel 2000 template
If you are customizing a Spreadsheet Solutions template (for example,
an Expense Statement, Invoice, or Purchase Order template), you can
customize information on the Customize sheet only. Do not change these
templates in any other way or you may prevent the formulas and macros from
working properly.
- On the File menu, click Open, and then locate and open
the template you want to modify.
If there aren't any templates listed
in the Open dialog box, click Templates in the Files of
type box.
- Modify the template.
- Click Save.
Note If Excel asks
what you would like to do after you click Save, select Create
a new record and click OK.
To customize a FrontPage 2000 template
- On the File menu, point to New, and then click
Page.
- Click the tab containing the template you want to modify, and then
in the list of templates, double-click the template of your choice.

- Double-click the folder that contains the template you are saving.
- Select the template you want to replace, and then click Save.
- When FrontPage asks if you want to replace the existing template,
click Yes.
If you want to customize a template that you have created, follow these
steps:
- On the File menu, point to New, and then click
Page.
- Click the tab containing the template you want to modify, and then
in the list of templates, double-click the template of your choice.

then in the Templates dialog box, select the template you have
customized and click OK.
- To share your customized template with other authors working on the
same Web, select the Save Template in Current Web check box, and
then click OK.
- When FrontPage asks if you want to replace the existing template,
click Yes.
To customize a Publisher 2000 template
You can only customize a template if you've upgraded from an earlier
version of Publisher, created a template yourself, or want to open a
third-party template created for Publisher.
- On the File menu, click New.
- In the Catalog dialog box, click Templates.
- Double-click the template you want to open. If you don't see the
file you want, navigate to the drive or folder it's in.
