Create Complex Tables by Using the Draw Table Tool in Word 2000 Click here to email this to a friend.

Complex tables with a different number of columns in some rows or a different number of rows in some columns have traditionally been hard to create on your computer. It's much easier to create standard tables with the same number of columns in every row and the same number of rows in every column. But now you can use the Draw Table tool in Word 2000 to make complex tables the easy way - by drawing them.

A Different Way to Make a Table

Think of the Draw Table tool as a pencil that you can use to sketch out a table on paper and you're halfway to creating a complex table in Word. Click Draw Table on the Table menu and use the Draw Table tool to draw a table directly on your document. After you draw a table, you can change column width or row height to a specific measurement or resize the entire table.

To see how to use the Draw Table tool, click Start in the Draw Table Tool Demo window.

The Draw Table tool is so easy to use you might be tempted to forget about the Insert Table command. But some tables may be easier to insert than to draw - for example, a long table that takes up more than one page, or a table that takes up the entire width of the page and has evenly spaced columns.

Tip  When you're through drawing, click Draw Table on the Tables and Borders toolbar, or press ESC to replace the Draw Table tool with the cursor.

Make a Mistake? Just Erase

Whether you draw or insert a table, use the Eraser tool to quickly erase errors or make changes. To use the Eraser tool, click on the Eraser (Tables and Borders toolbar). You can erase a line or row just as easily as using an eraser on paper. To see how to use the Eraser tool, click Start in the Eraser Tool Demo window.
