In Microsoft PhotoDraw™ 2000, you can create interesting art by using text characters - copyright symbols, ampersands, wingdings, and so forth - in your pictures.

Find the character you want to use

  1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, and then point to Accessories.
  2. Click Character Map.
  3. In the Font list, click a font.
  4. Double-click the character you want. The character appears in the Characters to Copy box.
  5. Click Copy.

Create a rectangle and fill it with a picture

  1. Click the Rectangle button on the Standard toolbar, and then click and drag in the picture area to draw a square.
  2. In the Outline workpane, click No Line to remove the outline.
  3. On the Fill menu, click Picture, and then click a thumbnail in the gallery.
In the example above, we clicked Sand Dunes.

Add a shadow to the text character

  1. Select the text character.
  2. If necessary, resize the text character by dragging the edges of its selection box, and then move it over the shape you just created
If the shape obscures the text character, select the shape, and then click Send to Back.
  3. With the text character selected, click Shadow from the Effects menu.
  4. In the gallery, click the shadow effect you want.
To reposition the shadow underneath the object, click Shadow Position, move the shadow to a new location, and then click Finish.

Group the objects and resize the picture area

  1. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  2. On the Arrange menu, click Group to merge the text and the shape into one object.
  3. With the grouped object selected, click Fit Picture Area to Selection from the View menu.
Resizing the picture area around the selected object ensures that you won't save extra white space with your final picture.
