To create the realistic-looking halo that surrounds the glint in the preceding figure, do the following:

Insert an eight-point star

  1. On the toolbar, click AutoShapes, point to Stars and Banners, and then click the eight-point star.
  2. To create the star, click once in the picture area.

Change the size, color, and shape of the star

  1. Hold down CTRL and drag the star to make it as large as you want.
  2. In the Outline workpane, click No Line. The star will disappear.
  3. At the top of the workpane, click Fill, and then click Two-Color Gradient.
  4. Set the Start color to red and the End color to white.
  5. In the Shape gallery, click Radial.
  6. Drag the AutoShape adjustment handle (the yellow diamond) toward the center of the object, so that the points of the star taper from the center outward.

Apply blur and fade-out effects

  1. On the Effects menu, click Blur.
  2. Adjust the Blur/Sharpen slider to -20.
  3. On the Effects menu, click Fade Out.
  4. Under Transparency, set the Start transparency to 100% and leave the End transparency at 0%.
  5. In the gallery, click Radial.

Create a circle

  1. Create a circle that is smaller in diameter than the star. On the Shapes toolbar, click Ellipse. Hold down CTRL and click in the workspace to create a circle.
  2. Click and drag one of the corner handles to change the circle's size. In the Outline workpane, click No Line for the circle's outline. The circle disappears.

Fill the circle with a gradient

  1. At the top of the workpane, click Fill, and then click Two-Color Gradient.
  2. Set the Start color to red and the End color to white.
  3. Adjust the Transparency sliders for both the Start and End colors to 40%.
  4. In the Shape gallery, click Radial.

Soften the edges of the circle

  1. On the Outline menu, click Soft Edges, and then adjust the Soft Edges slider to 100.
  2. On the Effects menu, click Transparency, and then adjust the Transparency slider to 20%.

Align and group the circle and star

  1. Select both the circle and the eight-point star.
  2. Use the Align commands on the Arrange menu to align the objects by their centers and middles.
  3. To group the objects as a single unit, click Group on the Arrange menu.

You now have a versatile halo effect that you can position behind the glint and rotate to match the angle of the glint.
