Creating Your Publisher 2000 Web Site Click here to email this to a friend.

You clarified your mission, core message, and the audience you want to attract. You planned your Web site (see Planning Your Publisher 2000 Web Site) and structured the information (see Structuring Your Publisher 2000 Web Site). The next step is to create your Web site.

You can create great-looking Web sites in Publisher 2000, and choose how much (or little) assistance you want while you work. Publisher offers three ways to create a Web site: convert an existing Publisher publication to a Web site, create a new Web site using the Web Site Wizard, or create your Web site from scratch.

Publisher offers many pre-made Web sites in the Publisher Catalog. The Design Gallery (Insert menu, Design Gallery Object) includes many design elements suitable for the Web, such as buttons, sidebars, pull quotes, navigation bars, and mastheads. In addition to Design Gallery elements, Publisher includes customizable form controls and the ability to add HTML code to create elements, such as a counter or a scrolling marquee.

Create Your Web Site from an Existing Print Publication

If you created a newsletter or brochure using the Publisher 2000 Catalog, you can quickly convert the publication to a Web site using the Newsletter Wizard or the Brochure Wizard. Publisher generates a home page, working hyperlinks, and navigation bars based on the design used in your printed publication. It also preserves your content, graphical elements, and design and color choices.

To convert a Publisher-designed newsletter or brochure to a Web site

  1. Open the publication that you want to use as the basis for your new Web site.
  2. If the wizard pane is not open, click Show Wizard on the status bar.
  3. In the top wizard pane, click Convert to Web Site.
  4. In the bottom wizard pane, click Create.
  5. Click Use the Web Site Wizard to automatically create a Web design with hyperlinks to have Publisher lay out the Web site and add navigation bar hyperlinks.
    -Or-
Click Add my own hyperlinks and do my own Web layout to duplicate the layout of your print publication. You add hyperlinks yourself.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Yes to save any changes you made to the print publication before you converted the content to a Web site.

If you used Publisher or one of the Publisher wizards to create a publication other than a newsletter or brochure, you can use the following procedure to convert the publication to a Web site.

To create a Web site from an existing print publication

  1. Open the publication that you want to use as the basis for your new Web site.
  2. Click Create Web Site from Current Publication on the File menu.
  3. When prompted, click Yes to run the Design Checker to find potential performance and design problems with your Web page layout.
  4. Make any other changes you want to the new Web pages.
  5. Click Save As on the File menu.
  6. Type a name for the new Web pages in the File name box.
  7. Click Save.

Create Your Web Site with a Wizard

Another fast, simple way to create a Web site in Publisher is to use the Web Site Wizard. The wizard offers many predesigned Web sites, which you can customize. It steps you through design choices and then creates the site for you.

To create a Web site with the Web Site Wizard

  1. Click New on the File menu.
  2. On the Publications by Wizard tab, click Web Sites in the Wizards pane.
  3. In the Web Sites pane, double-click the design you want.
  4. In the Wizard pane, click Next to make changes to the publication's color scheme, contents, layout, and personal information.
  5. When you finish making the changes you want, click Finish.

On your Web site, replace the placeholder text and graphics (see Using Graphics on Your Publisher 2000 Web Site) with your own, or with objects from the Clip Gallery, Design Gallery, the Internet, or other sources, such as a CD-ROM that contains photographs or clip art. You can also use an object you created in a draw program.

You can make additional changes to your Web site at any time with the wizard. On the top pane of the wizard, simply click the element of the publication you want to change, and then choose the options you want from the list in the bottom wizard pane.

Create Your Web Site from Scratch

You can create a Web site by starting with a blank page. You can still take advantage of Publisher's pre-made Web elements when designing your Web site from scratch.

To create a Web site from scratch

  1. Click New on the File menu.
  2. Click the Blank Publications tab in the Publisher Catalog.
  3. In the left pane, click Web Page.
  4. Click Create.

You now have a single blank Web page. You can add pages using the Insert menu, Page command.

Finish Your Web Site

Now that you created the pages for your Web site, there are a few more steps to take to finalize your site.
