Make Excel 2000 Charts More Compelling by Adding Images to Them Click here to email this to a friend.

You can make charts in Excel 2000 more compelling by using images for certain types of data markers, for the chart or plot area, as a background in chart titles and data labels, as legends in 2-D and 3-D charts, or in the walls and floor in 3-D charts. For instance, you can use a picture of a house in a data marker to represent the data point for average home sales per region:

Chart that uses pictures of houses as data markers.

Or, put a picture that describes your business in the plot area of a chart:

Chart that uses a picture of an airplane in the plot area.

Use a picture in a chart

To use a picture in a chart (except in 2-D line, scatter, or unfilled radar chart data markers--see note, below), follow these steps:

  1. Click the chart item that you want to use a picture for.
  2. On the Formatting toolbar, click the arrow next to Fill Color, click Fill Effects, and then click the Picture tab.
  3. To specify a picture, click Select Picture.
  4. In the Look in box, click the drive, folder, or Internet location that contains the picture, and then double-click the picture you want.
  5. On the Picture tab, select the options you want.
Note  To use a picture as a data marker in 2-D line, scatter, or unfilled radar charts (as illustrated in the first example in this article), select the picture on the worksheet, chart sheet, or in a picture editing program. Click Copy (Edit menu), click the data series, and then click Paste (Edit menu).

For more information, type use a picture in a chart in the Office Assistant or on the Answer Wizard tab in the Excel Help window, and then click Search.
