Moving Works 99 Data to Access 2000
You've decided it's time to move your data from Microsoft Works to Microsoft Access and you want to make sure the move goes smoothly. No problem. Here's your "moving guide" from Works 99 to Access 2000.
When you move data from one software product to another, you often need to convert the data from the old product to the new one. In this case, the move involves two basic steps:
- Export the data from Works to an external format supported by both products.
- Import the data into Access.
To move data from a Works database into Access, you export the data to either dBASE (*.dbf) or text (*.txt) file format, and then import the data into Access using the appropriate format. Unlike text format, the dBASE format preserves most field names. If you do import a text file into Access, you can either define field names in the Import Text Wizard, or modify the default field names in Design view of the table.
To move data from a Works spreadsheet into Access, you export the data to Lotus 1-2-3 (*.wk1) file format, and then import the data into Access. When you import a Lotus 1-2-3 file into Access, you can either define field names in the Import Spreadsheet Wizard, or modify the default field names in Design view of the table.
Once your data is in Access, you can quickly become productive in your new database by using the many wizards Access provides to create forms, reports, and data access pages.
