This update addresses three security vulnerabilities in Windows Media Player 6.4, and is discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS01-029. Download now to help prevent a malicious user from running code of his or her choice, or reading files on your computer. This update also helps prevent a privacy vulnerability that could allow a malicious set of Web site operators to differentiate you from other Web site visitors using profiling.

Important The vulnerabilities discussed in this update can also affect computers running Windows Media Player 7; however, this update only applies to computers running Windows Media Player 6.4. If you are running Windows Media Player 7 or Windows Media Player 6.4, installing Windows Media Player 7.1 eliminates these vulnerabilities.

This update helps eliminates the following vulnerabilities:

• A security vulnerability that could enable an attacker to run code of his or her choice on an affected computer.
• A security vulnerability that could enable an attacker to read, but not add, delete, or change files on an affected computer.
• A privacy issue that could enable a malicious Web site operator to identify visitors through profiling.
