Surrogate Support Extension and Enhanced Unicode IME (or Surrogate IME) Security Update

This update enhances support for Enhanced Unicode Input Method Editor (IME), also referred to as Surrogate IME, on Windows 2000 and resolves the Simplified Chinese IME State Recognition Vulnerability security issue in Windows 2000 and Windows NT® 4.0. This issue is discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS00-069. Download now to help prevent a malicious user from exploiting Enhanced Unicode IMEs logon screen to run code, add users to the computer, install or remove system components, add or remove software, and compromise data.

The package sets two registry keys to reflect the Surrogate font that is being used in the current system. The font names are the fonts that were released in Simplified Chinese Office XP. If you have your own Surrogate font, modify the following registry keys by including your own Surrogate font names:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\International\Scripts\42]

IEFixedFontName=[Surrogate Font Face Name]

IEPropFontName=[Surrogate Font Face Name]

Note Enhanced Unicode IME is available only in Simplified Chinese Office XP or Language Pack but is not installed by default. Computers that do not have Enhanced IME installed are not affected by this issue.
