Security Update, July 18, 2000

This update resolves the "Remote Registry Access Authentication" vulnerability in Windows NT 4.0 and is discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS00-040. Download now to help prevent unauthorized users from remotely logging on to your computer and causing Windows NT 4.0 to fail.

This vulnerability exists because the remote registry server, which authenticates remote registry access requests from remote computers, processes specially malformed requests from remote computers incorrectly. If a malicious user sends an affected computer a particular type of malformed request for remote registry access, it can cause Windows NT 4.0 to fail. This update ensures that malformed requests are processed correctly.

Note This vulnerability can only be exploited under very specific conditions; a malicious user needs an authorized account and password to log on to your computer remotely.
