128-Bit Dial-Up Networking

Using standard encryption, Windows 98 Second Edition users can encrypt dial-up and virtual private network connections. Download now to enable your computer to encrypt both types of connections using high encryption (128-bit).

Export Restrictions
The North American 128-bit Dial-Up Networking (DUN) Update for Windows 98 Second Edition contains strong encryption features. The 128-bit DUN may be distributed in the United States, its territories, possessions and dependencies, and Canada without an export license. Export of the 128-bit DUN from the United States is regulated under "EI controls" of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR, 15 CFR 730-744) of the U.S. Commerce Department, Bureau of Export Administration (BXA). An export license or applicable license exception is required to export the 128-bit DUN outside the United States or Canada.

For additional information, read the Microsoft Export home page (This site is in English).

System Requirements
This update applies to Windows 98 Second Edition.

How to use
When 128-bit encryption support is installed, a new checkbox appears in the Dial-Up Networking folder. Select this checkbox to require 128-bit encryption when it is available for a connection. For each connection, you can determine whether encryption is required. Selecting the 128-bit encryption setting affects all connections that require encryption.

To enable high encryption,

  1. Double-click My Computer
  2. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking folder and go to the Connections menu.
  3. Click Settings and, on the Security tab, select Only accept 128-bit encryption (when required).
Note This option is selected automatically when you install this component. All encryption-required connections will automatically require 128-bit sessions. If you do not want high encryption sessions, follow the steps above to clear the checkbox.

How to uninstall
  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. On the Windows Setup tab, select 128-bit Encryption Support for Dial-Up Networking.
  4. Click Add/Remove.
