This is the Readme for Forefront and System Center Demo Toolkit. ********************* NOTICE ********************* The virtual machines shipped with this demo may not have the most current patches and updates installed. DO NOT CONNECT THESE VIRTUAL MACHINES TO A REAL NETWORK until you have ensured that they have been fully patched and comply with your network’s standards. ******************** System Requirements ******************** 1. Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 or later: You will need to have Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 or later installed on the host PC to utilize this demo. An installation version of Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 has been included on this disc for your convenience. 2. Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2: These demos have not been tested for compatibility with Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2. However, there are no known compatibility issues with running the provided virtual machine files on Virtual Server 2005 R2. 3. To add a Virtual Machine to the Virtual Server 2005 console, go to the Master Status page. Under “Virtual Machines” click “add”. Input the path to your VMC file on your local disk for your VM and click “Add”. You must also modify the network settings for each Virtual Machine. For each Virtual Machine you add to the Virtual Server 2005 console, perform the following: a. From the “Master Status” page, mouse over your Virtual Machine then click “Edit Configuration”. b. Click “Network Adapters” on the “Status” page. c. From the “Network Adapter Properties” page, click the drop down menu next to “Connected to:” d. Select “Internal Network”. e. Repeat for all adapters. f. Click OK. 4. RAM: You will need 4GB of RAM on the host computer in order to run these demos. Performance will be negatively impacted if the host has less RAM. Virtual PC relies upon having sufficient available physical memory. If you see a message stating you do not have enough memory on the host, you may be able to adjust the allocated memory in the Virtual PC settings. Reducing memory allocation will reduce the performance of the virtual machines. It is recommended that you add additional physical memory to your computer instead of decreasing amounts allocated to the virtual machines. 5. Compression: NTFS compression is strongly recommended on the destination folder on the host computer for space and performance reasons. 6. Hard Drive Space: The host hard drive free space required for this demo is 9 GB in an uncompressed folder. 7. DVD-ROM: A device which supports dual-layer DVD reading is required. ********************* Demo Installation ********************* This demo is packaged in self extracting archive files. It requires 10 .VHD files and 9 .VMC files. Once extracted from the DVD to the host computer, double click the .VMC files or use the following steps to add each virtual machine to Virtual PC: 1. Click “New” on the Virtual PC console. 2. Click “Next” in the New Virtual Machine Wizard. 3. Select “Add an existing virtual machine”. 4. Click “Next”. 5. Browse to the location where the .VHD files were extracted to one you wish to add to Virtual PC. 6. Click “Next”. 7. Click “Finish”. 8. The virtual machine is now ready for use. **************** Demo Credentials **************** Username: Administrator Password: password Please view the demo script(s) for required credentials. Special Note: This demo was created with a U.S. keyboard layout. If using a non-U.S. keyboard, please use the appropriate alternative keystrokes. Special Note: Some international keyboards have difficulty entering the "@" symbol. If using a non-U.S. keyboard, press the "@" symbol as SHIFT/2. ******************* Save Changes / Undo ******************* These virtual machines have been configured with “Undo disks” enabled. With Undo Disks enabled, changes made to the virtual machine are saved in a separate file. This is preferred to allow for the possibility of resetting the demo or carrying forward changes made during a session. If needed, the undo disk setting can be modified with the following steps for each virtual machine: 1. Start Virtual PC 2. From the Virtual PC console, highlight the virtual machine to be modified. 3. Click “Settings”. 4. Click “Undo Disks” in the Setting column on the left side. 5. Click the “Enable undo disks” check box to de-select it. 6. Click “OK” on the virtual machine settings dialog box. 7. The virtual machine is now ready to use. **************** Close Behavior **************** The .VMC file has been configured to “Automatically shutdown and delete changes ”. This option allows for a user to shutdown the virtual machines without saving any changes that were made. Please ensure the preferred action of saving or discarding changes is selected when shutting down the virtual machines. If needed, the Close setting can be modified with the following steps: 1. Start Virtual PC 2. From the Virtual PC console, highlight the virtual machine to be modified. 3. Click “Settings”. 4. Click “Close” in the Setting column on the left side. 5. Click the appropriate radio button to either “Show message with these options at close” or “Automatically close without a message and:” then select the appropriate action from the drop-down menu. 6. Click “OK” on the virtual machine settings dialog box. 7. The virtual machine is now ready to use. *********** Expiration *********** The operating system of the virtual machines used in this demonstration are set to expire 3/10/2009. **************** Support **************** For questions or feedback regarding the Microsoft Partner Program site, please visit the Partner Contact Us page at https://partner.microsoft.com/40001608.
