1.1 System Requirements

The system requirements for Team Foundation Server and Team Explorer are located in the Team Foundation Installation Guide. The most current version of the Installation Guide is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center. For more information, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=82562.

1.2 Prerequisites

There are no known issues.

1.3 Installing

1.3.1   Integrated Installation Issue: Integrate the installation of Team Foundation Server and Service Pack 1.

You must integrate the installation of Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server and Service Pack 1 under the following circumstances:

To resolve this issue:

You can integrate the installation files of Service Pack 1 and Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server.  For more information, see "How to: Integrate the Installation of Team Foundation Server and Service Pack 1" in the installation guide for Team Foundation. You can download the most recent version of this guide from the  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=79226.

1.3.2   Integrated Installation Issue: You cannot install a standby application-tier server from the installation DVD for Team Foundation Server if the primary application-tier server is running Service Pack 1.

If your application-tier server is running Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server with Service Pack 1, you cannot use the installation DVD for Team Foundation Server to install a standby application-tier server. If you try to use the DVD, an error message states that the existing database is an older version, and installation is blocked. Although the database is actually newer, you still cannot proceed with installation.

To resolve this issue:

Before you can install the standby server, you must first combine files from the installation DVD with files for Service Pack 1 to create an Integrated Installation. For more information, download the installation guide for Team Foundation, and see the topic, "How to: Integrate the Installation of Team Foundation Server and Service Pack 1."

1.3.3   If you update Team Foundation Server with Service Pack 1, you should also update Team Explorer.

If you install Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Team Foundation Server, you should also update Team Explorer by installing SP1 for Visual Studio on client computers.

If you intend to install Team Explorer and Team Foundation Server on the same computer, you must install Team Explorer and SP1 for Visual Studio first, and then you can install Team Foundation Server and its SP1. You can either install Team Foundation Server before its SP1, or you can perform an integrated installation. For more information about how to perform an integrated installation, download the installation guide for Team Foundation Server from the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=79226), and see "How to: Integrate the Installation of Team Foundation Server and Service Pack 1."

To resolve this issue:

  1. Download SP1 for Visual Studio from the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=116488).
  2. Install SP1 for Visual Studio.
  3. Install SP1 for Team Foundation Server.

1.3.4   Integrated Installation Issue: If you performed an integrated installation of Team Foundation Server with the beta version of Service Pack 1 (SP1), you must uninstall Team Foundation Server to upgrade to the released version of SP1.

If you performed an integrated installation of Team Foundation Server with the beta version of its SP1, you must uninstall Team Foundation Server to upgrade to the released version of SP1. With an integrated installation, the only way to remove SP1 is to uninstall Team Foundation Server.

To resolve this issue:

  1. Uninstall Team Foundation Server.
  2. Create an integrated installation by combining files from the installation DVD with files for SP1. For more information, download the installation guide for Team Foundation, and see the topic "How to: Integrate the Installation of Team Foundation Server and Service Pack 1."

1.3.5   Integrated Installation Issue: During an integrated installation of Team Foundation Server, you are prompted for a product key.

You must provide a product key for Team Foundation Server when you upgrade from Team Foundation Server Trial Edition or Team Foundation Server Workgroup Edition. If you acquired Team Foundation Server through a volume licensing program, the key is embedded in the installation medium and can be difficult to find. Often you can obtain this key most easily by manually extracting it from your Volume License medium (CD, DVD, or .ISO image).

To resolve this issue:

  1. On your .ISO file or the installation medium for Team Foundation Server, open the AT folder.
  2. In a text editor such as Notepad, open the setup.sdb file, and search for the line that contains the text Product Key. The next line is the product key.

1.3.6   You might not be able to install Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Team Foundation Server on a localized operating system in a workgroup.

You might not be able to install SP1 on a localized operating system if the service accounts for Team Foundation Server are using Local Service. This problem does not apply to integrated installations of SP1.

For more information about integrated installation, download the installation guide for Team Foundation, and see "How to: Integrate the Installation of Team Foundation Server and Service Pack 1."

To resolve this issue:

  1. On the application-tier server for Team Foundation, open a Command Prompt window, and locate the TFSAdminUtil utility.
By default, this utility is located in the following directory:
    Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Team Foundation Server\Tools
  2. At the command prompt, type TFSAdminUtil ChangeAccount currentLocalService newAccount newPassword, and then press ENTER.
You must type the user name for the old TFSService account (currentLocalService), in addition to the user name and password for the new local account (newAccount and newPassword).
  3. Restart the server, and then install SP1.

1.3.7   Integrated Installation Issue: You cannot install Team Foundation Server Proxy or Team Foundation Build by performing an integrated installation.

If you want to install Service Pack 1 (SP1) with either Team Foundation Server Proxy or Team Foundation Build, you must install those components before you install SP1. You can perform an integrated installation only to set up an application-tier server.

To resolve this issue:

Install Team Foundation Server Proxy or Team Foundation Build first, and then download and install SP1 for Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server.

2.2 Converters

2.2.1   The Visual SourceSafe converter tool (VSSConverter.exe) checks for a Visual SourceSafe hotfix that is not installed.

When you start migrating source files by running VSSConverter.exe, you are prompted with a message that indicates that you must update Visual SourceSafe, and that you should install the update before you proceed. This message references KB article 950185 which is not yet released.

To resolve this issue:

  1. Insert the installation DVD for Team Foundation Server.
