Readme file for ADO.NET Data Services v1.5 CTP1 Thank you for downloading the ADO.NET Data Services v1.5 CTP1. This CTP is a preview of the set of features we are considering shipping with the next version of ADO.NET Data Services. This CTP targets the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and extends the functionality we provided in v1.0 of ADO.NET Data Services by providing additional features. This download includes a setup that will install all components needed to use this CTP. Ensure that the system meets all the system requirements before using the setup. For more information on installing the CTP see the Install Notes section below. -------------------- System Requirements: -------------------- - Windows® XP SP2, Windows Server® 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista®, or Windows 7 Beta operating system - Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 - Microsoft Visual Studio® 2008 SP1 or Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition - Microsoft Silverlight® 2 SDK and Microsoft Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 (both optional) -------------- Documentation: -------------- For documentation of this CTP, please visit our download page at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=db7ab68e-83d3-4ff1-b040-0d7603369668. For additional information on features, visit our blog at http://blogs.msdn.com/astoriateam. -------------- Install Notes: -------------- What you should know before installing ADO.NET Data Services v1.5 CTP: - The ADO.NET Data Services v1.5 CTP1 is a pre-release version of ADO.NET Data Services. While this release is a high-quality stable release, it is not considered a finished product. It is recommended that you do not install this CTP on your primary PC. - If you are intending to use the ADO.NET Data Services client library for Microsoft Silverlight 2 included in this CTP, install the Microsoft Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 before installing this CTP (available at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=c22d6a7b-546f-4407-8ef6-d60c8ee221ed&displaylang=en). - It is possible to use this CTP with the Windows 7 Beta; however, design time support integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 SP1 or Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition will not be available on Windows 7 Beta. Using DataSvcUtil.exe for client-side code generation will also not be available on Windows 7 Beta. You will receive a warning if you use the setup on a system with Windows 7 Beta installed indicating a file is locked but the setup will not fail. - This release is separate from the Project Codename “Astoria Offline”, Alpha Preview release that was made available online on March 03, 2009. Installing this CTP release on the same system as the offline preview is not supported and it is strongly recommended that you do not install the two releases on the same system. - The setup requires that Visual Studio is closed before running the setup. If Visual Studio is running, the setup will show a warning message indicating that a file is locked but the setup will not fail. If this occurs, close Visual Studio, re-run the setup, and choose the repair option in the setup to complete the install. ---- FAQ: ---- Q: Can I build applications on top of this CTP and expect to be able to use those applications on the final version of this release without any changes? A: No. Some applications built using this CTP may continue to work in the final version of this release, but this is not guaranteed. It is likely that features will be changed, removed, or added before the final release. Q: Is this CTP supported by Microsoft Customer Service and Support? A: No. This is preview release only and not supported by Microsoft Customer Service and Support. For questions about this release, please visit the ADO.NET Data Services forums and blog. Q: Can I use this CTP in a production environment? A: No. This is a purely unsupported release that should not be used in production environments. Q: Will the features included in this CTP be included in the Microsoft .NET Framework 4 when it is available? A: No. The features included here will not be included in the Microsoft .NET Framework 4. The features included in this CTP are built on the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. Once Microsoft .NET Framework 4 ships we will assess the best way to include features from this CTP in the Microsoft .NET Framework 4. It will be possible, however, to reference the assemblies included in this CTP (and any subsequent releases when they are available) from an application built on the Microsoft .NET Framework 4. Q: Where can I ask questions and provide feedback about this release? A: The best places are the Astoria Team Blog (http://blogs.msdn.com/astoriateam) and the ADO.NET Data Services forums (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/dataservices/threads)
